If your Polo has developed front-end knocking, loose steering, uneven tyre wear or that familiar tired feeling over bumps, replacing one worn component at a time may only solve part of the problem. This OCP Suspension Refresher Kit replaces several of the major wear components in the front suspension together, helping restore a tighter, quieter and more predictable front end.
The VW Polo 9N range was produced with more than one front control-arm and lower ball-joint system. Volkswagen introduced a production change on later vehicles, which means that two Polo 9N vehicles registered in the same year can potentially require different suspension components.
For late-production 2008-2009 vehicles, OCP strongly recommends supplying the full 17-digit VIN before dispatch so that the correct suspension kit can be confirmed.
The objective of this kit is not simply to sell a collection of suspension parts. It is designed as a practical front-end refresh for an ageing Polo where several original suspension components may have already covered many years and thousands of kilometres together.
This is where the Polo 9N can become confusing. During later production Volkswagen changed from the earlier 6Q0-series front suspension components to a later 6R0-series control-arm and ball-joint system.
This does not mean that a late Polo 9N automatically uses the much longer 376 mm wide-track control arm found on the later-generation Polo 6R.
In other words, seeing a VW part number beginning with 6R0 does not by itself mean that the vehicle is a Polo 6R. Volkswagen introduced certain 6R0-series suspension components into late Polo 9N production before the complete new-generation Polo 6R replaced it.

Volkswagen's parts catalogue identifies specific chassis-number breakpoints for the change in front suspension components. Depending on the production plant, the earlier system is catalogued up to the following chassis numbers, with the later design starting immediately afterwards.

Some aftermarket catalogues describe these suspension arms using approximate measurements from the control-arm bush area to the ball-joint area. This has led to considerable confusion because both parts can appear similar in photographs.
The important difference is not simply a few millimetres of metal. The longer arm changes the suspension geometry and is associated with a wider front track.
Approx. 360 mm type: later narrow-track suspension family used on applicable late Polo 9N vehicles.
Approx. 376 mm type: longer wide-track control-arm family associated with later Polo 6R suspension geometry and should not be selected merely because the vehicle has a 6R0-series OE number.
For this reason OCP does not recommend identifying the correct Polo 9N kit using a tape measure alone. VIN confirmation and OE-number verification are considerably safer.
Our preferred identification method is the vehicle's 17-digit VIN. Where additional verification is required, we may also request the OE number from the existing arm, a photograph of the suspension, or a physical measurement.
This is particularly important on older vehicles because suspension components may have been replaced, converted or incorrectly fitted at some point during the vehicle's life.
The control arms, ball joints, bushes and stabiliser links all work together to locate and control the front wheels while allowing the suspension to move. When one component becomes badly worn, neighbouring parts have often been subjected to the same mileage, potholes, braking loads and road conditions.
Replacing the main wear components together can make more sense than repeatedly stripping the same front suspension every few months as individual worn parts reveal themselves.
These symptoms can also be caused by other steering, suspension, tyre or wheel-alignment faults. A proper inspection should always be carried out before replacing parts.
The rubber bushes in the lower control arms isolate vibration while allowing controlled movement of the arm. As the rubber ages it can crack, soften or separate from its bonded sleeve. This allows the wheel to move backwards, forwards or sideways more than intended under braking and cornering loads.
A badly worn bush can therefore affect far more than comfort. It can contribute to vague steering, instability under braking and irregular tyre wear.
The lower ball joint connects the control arm to the wheel hub assembly while allowing the wheel to steer and the suspension to move. Wear in the joint can produce knocking, looseness and unwanted wheel movement.
The early and late Polo 9N control-arm systems use different matching ball-joint families, which is another reason why OCP matches the complete kit rather than selecting the control arm by appearance alone.
Stabiliser links connect the anti-roll bar to the suspension and are subjected to constant movement as the vehicle travels over uneven roads. Once the joints develop play they commonly produce a light knocking or rattling sound over small bumps and rough surfaces.
Including both stabiliser links in the refresher kit allows the left and right sides of the front suspension to be refreshed at the same time.
Suspension components are safety-critical parts and should be installed by a competent mechanic using the correct workshop procedures and torque specifications.
Where bonded rubber suspension bushes require final tightening at normal ride height, the manufacturer's workshop procedure should be followed to prevent the rubber bush from being permanently preloaded.
A professional wheel alignment should be carried out after the control arms, ball joints or related front suspension components have been replaced.
This kit concentrates on the major lower front suspension wear components. Depending on the condition and mileage of your vehicle, your mechanic should also inspect the shock absorbers, top mounts, wheel bearings, tie-rod ends, rack ends, steering rack, springs and anti-roll-bar mounting bushes.
These components are not automatically included in this Level 1 kit unless specifically stated in the product contents above.

No. Late-production Polo 9N vehicles can use 6R0-series suspension components. The OE-number prefix alone is not enough to identify a 376 mm wide-track arm.
Measurement can be useful as a secondary check, but OCP recommends identifying the vehicle by VIN and OE number first because different suppliers may use slightly different measuring points.
