Ford Cortina Essex V6 Electronic Distributor Conversion Service

Modernise the ignition system on your classic Ford Essex V6 without throwing away the original distributor. The Online Car Parts electronic distributor conversion replaces the traditional mechanical contact points with an electronic magnetic trigger and external ignition control module, while retaining your original Ford distributor body, shaft and drive arrangement.

Developed for classic Ford owners who actually drive their cars, this conversion gives the Essex V6 a considerably more dependable and consistent ignition switching system than conventional breaker points. There is no points gap to continually inspect and adjust, no contact faces gradually burning away, and no mechanical points bounce affecting ignition triggering as engine speed increases.

The result is a cleaner and more stable ignition system that can provide easier starting, a steadier idle, more consistent ignition timing, cleaner acceleration and improved high-rpm ignition stability when compared with a worn or incorrectly adjusted points distributor.

IMPORTANT: THIS IS A CONVERSION SERVICE
Your original Ford Essex V6 distributor must be sent to Online Car Parts for conversion. We modify and return your distributor as an electronic ignition unit. You are not purchasing a complete replacement distributor off the shelf.

Why Upgrade from Points to Electronic Ignition?

The conventional Ford Essex distributor uses mechanical contact-breaker points to switch the ignition coil. It is a simple system and it served these engines well for decades, but it has an unavoidable weakness: every time the engine runs, the contact points physically open and close thousands of times.

As the contacts wear, the points gap and dwell angle change. That can gradually alter ignition timing, reduce the consistency of coil charging and eventually contribute to difficult starting, unstable idle, misfiring or poor high-rpm performance.

A correctly installed electronic ignition system performs the coil-switching operation electronically. Instead of depending on two mechanical contacts repeatedly opening and closing, the distributor uses an electronic pickup to provide a precise trigger signal to the ignition module.

Practical advantages of the OCP electronic conversion:
  • Eliminates routine contact-point adjustment and replacement.
  • Eliminates mechanical points bounce at higher engine speeds.
  • More consistent ignition triggering and dwell control.
  • More stable ignition timing between service intervals.
  • Can improve cold starting and hot restarting where the original points system is worn.
  • Can provide a steadier idle and cleaner throttle response.
  • Improved ignition reliability for regularly driven classic cars.
  • Reduces routine ignition maintenance.
  • Retains the original distributor body and classic engine-bay appearance.
  • No need to redesign the distributor drive arrangement.

Electronic ignition should not be confused with a stand-alone performance modification that magically adds horsepower. Its real strength is that it provides a more accurate, repeatable and maintenance-friendly way of controlling the ignition coil. On an engine where the old points system is worn, bouncing or incorrectly adjusted, the improvement in starting, smoothness and drivability can be very noticeable.

We Convert Your Original Essex V6 Distributor

One of the major advantages of the OCP system is that the original distributor does not need to be replaced with an unknown generic unit.

Your existing distributor is converted from a mechanical points system to an electronic trigger system. This retains the distributor body and drive that already fits your engine while modernising the component responsible for switching the ignition coil.

This is particularly important on classic Fords because many Cortinas, Capris, Granadas, Couriers, Sierra/Sapphire conversions and other Essex-powered vehicles have been modified during their lifetime. Using the actual distributor from your engine eliminates much of the uncertainty associated with ordering a replacement distributor from a photograph or vehicle listing.

The converted assembly typically consists of:

  • Your original Ford Essex V6 distributor body and drive.
  • Electronic magnetic pickup / trigger conversion.
  • External electronic ignition control module.
  • Pre-wired distributor-to-module harness where applicable.
  • Vehicle-side ignition wiring connections.
  • OCP electronic distributor fitment and commissioning guide.

Designed Around the Ford Essex V6

The OCP DIST0090 conversion has been developed specifically around the Ford Essex V6 distributor family, with particular focus on the Ford Cortina 3.0 V6 and related South African classic Ford applications.

Application Notes
Ford Cortina V6 Primary application for this conversion service.
Ford Capri Applicable Essex V6 distributor installations.
Ford Granada Applicable Essex V6 distributor installations.
Ford Courier Including vehicles converted to Essex V6 power.
Ford Sierra / Sapphire Applicable Essex V6 engine conversions.
Mazda B-Series Applicable vehicles fitted with Ford Essex V6 engines.
Custom / Modified Vehicles Compatibility must be confirmed from the distributor fitted to the engine.
Classic Ford fitment warning:
These vehicles are now several decades old and many have been engine-swapped, re-wired or modified. Always identify the distributor actually fitted to the vehicle rather than relying purely on the vehicle model.

Ford Essex V6 Technical Reference

Correct distributor installation is every bit as important as the electronic conversion itself. The OCP fitment guide supplied with this service includes the essential Essex V6 distributor information needed to correctly refit and commission the system.

Ford Essex V6 firing order: 1 - 4 - 2 - 5 - 3 - 6
Distributor rotation: Clockwise
No. 1 cylinder: Front-right cylinder in the direction of travel
3.0 Essex base timing reference: Approximately 10° BTDC as an initial baseline

If the original distributor position has been marked before removal, refitting is straightforward. If those marks have been lost, the engine can be brought to No. 1 cylinder on the compression stroke, the crank set to approximately 10° BTDC as a starting reference, and the distributor installed so that the rotor points toward the No. 1 cap terminal once the distributor gear is fully engaged.

The remaining HT leads are then installed clockwise around the distributor cap in the firing order 1-4-2-5-3-6.

Electronic Module and Wiring

The distributor and electronic ignition module are normally supplied pre-wired on the distributor side. Only the vehicle-side connections need to be completed during installation.

The supplied OCP technical guide identifies each module terminal by function rather than wire colour. This is important because classic Ford wiring looms may have been repaired or modified over the years and conversion harness wire colours may vary between production batches.

Terminal Function Installation Note
1 Magnetic pickup negative Normally pre-wired to the distributor pickup.
2 Magnetic pickup positive Normally pre-wired to the distributor pickup.
3 Switched +12 V supply Must have battery voltage with the key in RUN and while cranking.
4 Ignition trigger output Connects to coil negative / ignition interface as supplied.
Earth Module body / mounting point Must be mounted to clean bare metal.
A GOOD MODULE EARTH IS ESSENTIAL

The ignition module must be mounted securely to clean bare metal. A poor earth is one of the most common causes of intermittent cut-out, misfiring and unreliable electronic ignition operation.

Important Information for Ballasted Ford Ignition Systems

Many classic Fords use a ballast resistor or resistance wire in the original ignition circuit. On these vehicles, the voltage measured at the coil positive terminal may only be approximately 6 to 9 volts while the engine is running.

That reduced voltage may be correct for the original ballasted ignition coil, but it must not automatically be used as the electronic module's power supply.

The electronic module requires a clean switched 12 V supply.

If the original ballast system is retained, the module supply and coil circuit must be identified correctly. If the ballast system is removed or bypassed, the ignition coil must be suitable for direct 12 V operation. A low-voltage ballasted coil must not simply be connected directly to 12 V unless it is designed for that duty.

Correct Ignition Timing After Conversion

The conversion removes mechanical point wear, but the distributor body still determines the engine's base ignition timing. The timing therefore must be checked with a strobe timing light after installation.

For a standard 3.0 litre Essex V6 running on modern unleaded fuel, the OCP technical guide uses 10° BTDC as a sensible initial baseline unless the individual engine specification requires something different.

Where vacuum advance is fitted, disconnect and plug the vacuum hose while setting base timing. After adjustment, reconnect the vacuum advance and progressively raise engine speed to confirm that ignition advance increases smoothly without erratic jumping or misfire.

Modified 3.4 Essex V6 engines:
Do not blindly use the standard 3.0 timing figure. Engines fitted with increased compression, modified camshafts, different carburettors, altered cylinder heads or 3.4 litre conversions should be timed to the engine builder or tuner's specification.

What a Correctly Commissioned Conversion Should Feel Like

After correct installation and timing, a healthy Essex V6 electronic ignition conversion should demonstrate:

  • Clean cold starting.
  • Clean hot restarting.
  • Stable idle.
  • Smooth throttle response.
  • Engine revs freely without breaking down.
  • Ignition timing advances smoothly with RPM.
  • No excessive ignition coil or module temperature.
  • No high-rpm ignition misfire.
  • No detonation or pinking under load.

Built-In Troubleshooting Support

The OCP electronic conversion is supplied with a detailed technical fitment and commissioning guide. Rather than leaving the installer with four wires and a photocopied sketch, the guide covers the most common problems encountered when converting a classic Ford to electronic ignition.

Symptom Typical Checks
No spark / no start Check switched 12 V during RUN and START, module earth, coil feed, coil negative trigger, distributor cap, rotor and centre HT lead.
Starts only while cranking Check whether ignition voltage exists during START but disappears when the key returns to RUN.
Starts but will not rev cleanly Check magnetic pickup polarity. The two pickup connections may need to be reversed with the ignition OFF.
Backfires / kicks back Recheck No. 1 compression position, rotor phasing and firing order. The distributor may be one tooth out or 180° out.
Intermittent cut-out Check module earth, crimps, spade terminals, coil connections and wiring exposed to heat or vibration.
Coil or module becomes very hot Stop and verify coil resistance, ballast configuration, module supply voltage and module mounting.

A Modern Ignition Upgrade Without Losing the Classic Ford Character

The Essex V6 has a character all of its own. The purpose of this conversion is not to turn a classic Ford into a modern fuel-injected vehicle. It is to remove one of the more maintenance-intensive parts of the original ignition system while preserving the distributor and engine installation that belong in the car.

For the Cortina owner who regularly drives the vehicle, participates in club runs, undertakes long-distance trips or simply wants the car to start reliably on a Sunday morning without reaching for a feeler gauge, electronic ignition is one of the most worthwhile usability upgrades that can be made to the Essex V6.
