Suzuki K12M 1.2 Stage 1 Engine Overhaul Kit

A carefully selected core rebuild package for the popular Suzuki K12M 1.2-litre petrol engine used across Swift, Dzire, Ignis and selected Splash applications.

Stage 1 does not mean "replace everything". It gives your engine builder the main internal wear, bearing and sealing components required for a basic overhaul when the crankshaft, cylinder block and cylinder head remain serviceable or can be restored within specification.

First, Some Good News About Your K12M

The Suzuki K12M has earned a reputation as a relatively simple, durable and reliable naturally aspirated engine when serviced correctly.

That means a K12M needing an overhaul does not automatically point to a fundamental engine design problem. High mileage, prolonged oil consumption, overheating, poor lubrication, incorrect servicing or continued operation after a fault can eventually wear out even a very good engine.

The objective of a proper rebuild is not simply to replace damaged parts.
It is to determine why the original engine deteriorated, repair that cause, measure every critical component and then rebuild the engine around confirmed specifications.

K12M, K12N, Z12E... They're All 1.2s, But They're Not the Same Engine

This distinction becomes especially important on later Swift and Dzire models.

New-generation 1.2-litre 3-cylinder engine used in the latest Swift and Dzire. K12M overhaul components must not be ordered for a Z12E.

Especially important on 2024 vehicles: model year alone is not enough. Confirm the engine code or VIN before ordering.

One K12M Engine Family, Several Suzuki Models

Suzuki used the K12M across several vehicles and generations. The body and transmission may change dramatically while the engine code remains K12M.

Swift ZC62 South Africa: 2014-2018

Indian-built 1.2-litre K12M Swift. Early examples produced approximately 63 kW and 113 Nm, with later calibration revisions.

Swift ZC63 South Africa: 2018-2024

Later-generation K12M Swift rated around 61 kW and 113 Nm, available with manual or AMT transmission.

Dzire K12M applications

The same K12M engine family was widely used in the compact Suzuki sedan.

Ignis K12M applications

South African Ignis 1.2 models also use the K12M engine family.

Splash Selected 1.2 applications

K12M applications also appear in selected Splash models.

Output and calibration vary according to model, production year and market. Internal engine parts should always be confirmed using the K12M engine code, VIN and required machining size.

When a Stage 1 Rebuild Makes Sense

  • Engine has developed excessive oil consumption.
  • Compression has fallen because of normal piston-ring or cylinder wear.
  • Big-end and main bearings require renewal.
  • Engine has accumulated high mileage but major components remain rebuildable.
  • Crankshaft remains usable or can be correctly reconditioned.
  • Cylinder bores remain within an available rebuild size.
  • Cylinder head remains serviceable and within machining specifications.

When Stage 1 May Not Be Enough

  • Engine has seized because of oil starvation.
  • Crankshaft journals are badly scored or damaged.
  • Cylinder bores require machining beyond available piston sizes.
  • Severe overheating has distorted or cracked the cylinder head.
  • Timing failure has caused valve or piston damage.
  • Connecting rods, crankshaft or block have suffered major mechanical damage.
  • The cause of the original failure has not yet been identified.

What Is Included in Your Stage 1 K12M Kit?

A "set" means the quantity required for the complete 4-cylinder engine.

Please note: machining, engineering work, labour, engine oil, coolant, filters, timing components and any components not specifically listed above are not included.

Before Ordering: Measure First, Buy Once

Pistons and bearings should not be selected simply because the old engine has been stripped. The crankshaft and cylinders must first tell your engine builder which sizes the rebuilt engine requires.

01. Measure the Bores

Check diameter, taper, scoring and out-of-round condition.

02. Measure the Crankshaft

Inspect every journal and determine the correct bearing size.

03. Inspect the Cylinder Head

Check flatness, cracks, valves, guides, seats and sealing surfaces.

04. Diagnose the Failure

Find out whether lubrication, overheating, compression loss or another fault caused the original damage.

K12M-Specific Workshop Advice

What Deserves Special Attention While the K12M Is Apart?

1. Timing Chain, Guides & Tensioner

The K12M uses a timing chain rather than a conventional timing belt. That removes the normal scheduled cambelt replacement job, but it does not mean the timing system should be ignored forever.

On a high-mileage engine or one with an uncertain oil-service history, inspect the chain, guides, tensioner, sprockets and timing components for wear before rebuilding around them.

Do not automatically replace a good timing chain. Inspect it properly. If there is abnormal chain noise, excessive wear, damaged guides or tensioner problems, then deal with the timing system while the engine is apart.

2. Valve Clearance - A K12M Detail That Should Not Be Ignored

The K12M uses a shimless tappet-style valve train and Suzuki specifically includes valve-clearance inspection in K12M maintenance schedules.

Excessive clearance can contribute to valve-train noise. Insufficient clearance can prevent a valve from seating correctly as the engine reaches operating temperature, potentially affecting compression and valve life.

During cylinder-head work: inspect valves, valve guides, valve seats and tappet clearances and set them according to the applicable Suzuki workshop specification.

3. PCV / Crankcase Ventilation

Suzuki specifically includes the PCV valve in K12M maintenance schedules. This small component controls crankcase ventilation and should not be forgotten during an overhaul.

A restricted or malfunctioning PCV system can contribute to poor running, increased crankcase pressure, oil leaks and oil-consumption complaints.

Especially important when the old engine consumed oil: do not automatically blame the piston rings without also checking the PCV system and valve-stem sealing.

4. Oil Pump, Oil Strainer & Oil Pressure

New bearings will not survive if the lubrication problem that damaged the original bearings is still present.

Suzuki workshop diagnostics for the K12M specifically include incorrect oil viscosity, a restricted oil strainer, deteriorated oil-pump performance, oil-pump relief-valve wear and excessive internal clearances when investigating low oil pressure.

If the old engine had a bearing knock or oil-pressure warning: inspecting the oil pump and pickup system is not optional.

5. Cooling System & Previous Overheating

Overheating is one of the fastest ways to turn a serviceable aluminium engine into an expensive rebuild. If overheating contributed to this overhaul, replacing pistons and bearings without repairing the cooling fault solves nothing.

Inspect the water pump, thermostat, radiator, cooling fan operation, hoses, coolant pipes and all evidence of external or internal coolant loss.

Cylinder head: an overheated engine should have the head checked for distortion and cracking before reassembly.

6. Do Not Rebuild an Engine Just Because It Misfires

The K12M uses individual ignition coils and electronic multipoint fuel injection. A misfire or rough idle can be caused by ignition, injector, air-intake, PCV or mechanical problems.

Compression testing, leak-down testing and proper diagnosis should determine whether the fault is actually inside the engine before an otherwise serviceable engine is stripped.

What Was Your K12M Trying to Tell You?

Engine Symptom What Should Be Checked
Blue smoke / excessive oil consumption Piston rings, cylinder wear, pistons, valve guides, valve-stem seals and PCV system.
Low compression Ring sealing, bore condition, valves, valve clearance, cylinder-head gasket and cylinder-head sealing.
Bottom-end knocking Big-end bearings, main bearings, crankshaft journals, oil pressure, oil pump, pickup strainer and lubrication system.
Oil-pressure warning Oil level and grade, oil filter, pickup strainer, oil pump, pressure-relief valve, bearing clearances and pressure switch.
Timing-chain noise Timing chain, guides, tensioner, sprockets, oil condition and general valve-train condition.
Engine overheated Cylinder head, head gasket, water pump, thermostat, radiator, cooling fan, hoses and complete cooling system.
Rough idle / misfire Compression, valve clearance, spark plugs, ignition coils, injectors, PCV system and intake-air leaks.
Oil in coolant / coolant in oil Cylinder-head gasket, cylinder-head condition, sealing surfaces and possible cracking.

Your K12M Is Already Apart. What Else Should You Inspect?

This is where a well-planned rebuild can save you from paying the same labour twice.

Priority 1: Protect the New Bearings

Oil Pump
Inspect carefully if the old engine had low oil pressure or bearing damage.
Oil Pickup / Strainer
Clean and inspect before a rebuilt engine is allowed to depend on it.
New Oil Filter
Never start a freshly rebuilt engine using an old contaminated filter.
Correct Engine Oil
Use the correct specification and viscosity for the applicable Suzuki model.

Priority 2: Timing & Cylinder Head

Timing Chain System
Inspect the chain, guides, tensioner and sprockets before reassembly.
Valve Clearance
K12M valve clearances should be checked and corrected according to Suzuki specifications.
Valve Guides & Seats
Check wear and sealing while the cylinder head is already stripped.
Cylinder Head Bolts
Check Suzuki's applicable reuse procedure and service limits and replace where required.

Priority 3: Make Sure It Never Overheats Again

Water Pump
Check the pump for leakage, bearing play and deterioration.
Thermostat
A thermostat problem can undo an expensive rebuild remarkably quickly.
Radiator & Cooling Fan
Confirm coolant flow, radiator condition and correct cooling-fan operation.
Hoses & Coolant
Inspect ageing hoses and refill the cleaned system using the correct coolant.

Priority 4: Crankcase Breathing & Oil Control

PCV Valve
Particularly worth checking when oil consumption or crankcase-pressure symptoms existed.
Breather Hoses
Check for restriction, sludge, splitting or deterioration.
Crankshaft Oil Seals
Inspect front and rear crankshaft sealing while access is easy.
Camshaft / Cover Seals
Deal with ageing sealing components before the engine returns to the vehicle.

Priority 5: The Parts That Are Cheap to Reach Now

Clutch Kit
On applicable manual models, inspect the clutch while the engine and gearbox are separated.
Engine Mountings
Inspect cracked, collapsed or oil-contaminated mountings while access is improved.
Auxiliary Drive Belt
Check belt condition, tension and associated pulleys.
Service Kit
Start the rebuilt engine's new life with fresh filtration and service components.

Priority 6: Ignition & Fuel System

Spark Plugs
Install the correct specification and begin with a known-good ignition baseline.
Ignition Coils
Inspect and test rather than replacing good coils unnecessarily.
Fuel Injectors
Confirm consistent injector operation if the original engine suffered misfire or uneven running.
Air Filter
A rebuilt engine deserves clean filtered air from its first kilometre.
The OCP rule: if an inexpensive wear component becomes difficult or labour-intensive to reach after the engine is reassembled, inspect it now. A cheap part can become a very expensive repair when the labour has to be done twice.

Low Compression Does Not Automatically Mean "Buy Pistons"

Compression can escape past the piston rings, intake or exhaust valves, cylinder-head gasket or damaged sealing surfaces.

A compression test, leak-down test, bore measurement, valve inspection and valve-clearance check together provide far more useful information than simply replacing parts and hoping for the best.

K12M Engine Rebuild Checklist

Before Assembly
  • Confirm K12M engine code and VIN.
  • Measure every cylinder bore.
  • Measure crankshaft journals.
  • Check crankshaft run-out and journal condition.
  • Check piston-to-bore clearance.
  • Check piston-ring end gaps.
  • Check bearing oil clearances.
  • Clean oil galleries thoroughly.
  • Inspect oil pickup and oil pump.
  • Inspect cylinder head for damage or distortion.
  • Inspect valves, guides and seats.
  • Check K12M valve clearances.
  • Inspect the timing-chain system.
During Assembly
  • Follow Suzuki workshop specifications.
  • Follow the correct tightening sequences.
  • Use correct bearing sizes.
  • Use appropriate engine assembly lubricant.
  • Keep gasket surfaces completely clean.
  • Use sealant only where specified.
  • Confirm correct camshaft and crankshaft timing.
  • Confirm free engine rotation during assembly.
  • Install oil seals carefully and correctly.
  • Replace single-use fasteners where specified.
Before First Start
  • Install a new oil filter.
  • Fill with correct engine oil.
  • Prime the lubrication system where applicable.
  • Fill and bleed the cooling system correctly.
  • Confirm PCV and breather operation.
  • Check fuel, coolant and oil connections.
  • Verify oil pressure immediately after start-up.
  • Monitor coolant temperature carefully.
  • Check for abnormal mechanical noise.
  • Inspect for oil or coolant leaks.
  • Recheck all fluid levels after initial operation.

Standard Size or Oversize? Do Not Guess.

The standard K12M cylinder bore is 73.0 mm. That does not mean a used engine still measures 73.0 mm everywhere after years of service.

If the cylinders require machining or the crankshaft has previously been ground, standard-size pistons, rings or bearings may be incorrect. Obtain the final machining sizes from your engine reconditioner before ordering internal engine components.
