VW Polo Vivo CLP / CLS Stage 1 Engine Overhaul Kit

A practical Stage 1 rebuild package for the popular Volkswagen Polo and Polo Vivo CLP / CLS naturally aspirated petrol engine family.

Stage 1 does not mean "replace everything". It provides the core internal wear, bearing and sealing components required for a basic overhaul when the crankshaft, cylinder block and cylinder head remain serviceable or can be restored within specification.

6S, 6R, CLP, CLS... What Do All These VW Codes Mean?

Volkswagen used this engine family across several Polo and Polo Vivo body configurations. The body code can change while the engine family remains closely related.

6S1 / 6S3

Polo Vivo hatchback body references commonly found in parts catalogues.

6S2 / 6S4

Polo Vivo sedan / saloon body references.

6R / 6R1

Polo platform and catalogue references also associated with CLPA / CLSA applications.

The important code is the ENGINE CODE.

A body code tells us which vehicle shell or platform you have. The engine code tells us which internal engine components you require. Always confirm whether your engine is CLPA, CLPB or CLSA before ordering internal rebuild parts.

CLP / CLS Engine Family at a Glance

These engines share a closely related Volkswagen 4-cylinder architecture, but there are important differences between the 1.4 and 1.6 versions.

Important: The 1.4 CLPA / CLPB and 1.6 CLSA share many engine-family components, but they are not identical internally. Pistons and other internal components must be matched to the correct engine code and machining size.

When a Stage 1 Rebuild Makes Sense

  • Engine is using excessive engine oil.
  • Compression has fallen because of normal internal wear.
  • Piston rings and bearings require replacement.
  • Engine has high mileage and is being refreshed.
  • Cylinder bores remain within a suitable rebuild specification.
  • Crankshaft can be reused or correctly reconditioned.
  • Cylinder head remains repairable and within machining limits.

When Stage 1 May Not Be Enough

  • Timing chain failure has caused valve or piston damage.
  • Engine has seized following oil starvation.
  • Crankshaft journals are severely damaged.
  • Cylinder bores require machining beyond available piston sizes.
  • Cylinder head is cracked or beyond repair.
  • Connecting rods or crankshaft have suffered major damage.
  • Severe overheating has damaged multiple engine components.

What Is Included in Your Stage 1 Kit?

A "set" means the complete quantity required for the applicable 4-cylinder engine.

1. Complete Piston Set

Complete piston set matched to the applicable CLP / CLS engine variant and selected size.

2. Complete Piston Ring Set

Complete ring set for all four cylinders, supplied in the applicable size.

3. Big-End Bearing Set

Complete connecting-rod bearing set for the engine.

4. Main Bearing Set

Complete crankshaft main bearing set.

5. Full Engine Gasket Set

Comprehensive gasket and sealing set for engine reassembly. Exact contents can vary according to manufacturer and application.

6. Rear Main Oil Seal

Included because the gearbox-end crankshaft seal is difficult and labour-intensive to access once the engine and transmission are assembled.

7. Silicone Sealer - FREE

One silicone sealing product supplied free with the overhaul kit.

8. Engine Cleaner x 2 - FREE

Two engine cleaning products supplied free to assist with preparation and reassembly.

Why We Include the Rear Main Oil Seal

The rear main seal sits around the crankshaft at the gearbox end of the engine. Its job is simple: keep engine oil inside the engine while the crankshaft rotates. Replacing it later, however, is anything but simple.

Age & Heat Cycles

Years of heat and crankshaft rotation can harden or wear the sealing lip.

Crankcase Pressure

A restricted PCV / breather system can allow crankcase pressure to rise and encourage oil past engine seals.

Engine Blow-By

Worn piston rings can increase combustion gases entering the crankcase, increasing the workload placed on the ventilation and sealing system.

Installation Matters

Rear crankshaft seals require careful installation. Damage, incorrect positioning or incorrect installation procedure can create a new leak.

Why change it during an overhaul?

Because the gearbox and flywheel / drive plate must normally be removed to reach it. When the engine is already being rebuilt, access is dramatically easier. A relatively inexpensive seal can become an expensive labour job if it starts leaking after the engine has been reinstalled.

Possible Signs of a Rear Main Seal Area Leak

  • Engine oil appearing between the engine and gearbox.
  • Oil collecting around the lower bellhousing area.
  • Engine oil level gradually dropping.
  • Oil contamination around the flywheel area.
  • On manual vehicles, severe leakage can eventually contaminate clutch components.
Workshop note: Oil running down from higher on the engine can sometimes appear to be a rear main seal leak. The source of any existing leak should be correctly diagnosed before parts are replaced.

CLP / CLS Engine Areas Worth Checking During a Rebuild

These engines are generally durable when maintained, but several areas deserve attention while everything is accessible.

1. Timing Chain, Guides & Tensioner

CLPA, CLPB and CLSA engines use a timing chain. Higher mileage, poor oil maintenance or wear in the chain, guides and tensioning system can lead to excessive chain noise or incorrect valve timing. A badly worn timing system should not be ignored because loss of correct camshaft timing can cause major engine damage.

During an overhaul: inspect the timing chain, guides, tensioner, sprockets and chain drive components before reassembly.

2. Cooling System & Overheating

Water pumps, coolant connections, core / Welch plugs and ageing cooling-system components are worth checking carefully on these engines. Rebuilding an engine without correcting the reason it overheated is an excellent way to pay for the same repair twice.

Inspect: water pump, thermostat, thermostat housing, radiator, coolant pipes, hoses, fan operation and evidence of coolant leakage.

3. PCV / Crankcase Ventilation System

The crankcase ventilation system controls pressure and routes blow-by gases back into the intake. A restricted or damaged PCV / breather system can contribute to poor idle quality, oil contamination, oil consumption and excessive crankcase pressure.

Important: excessive crankcase pressure can place unnecessary stress on crankshaft, camshaft and other engine seals, including the rear main seal.

4. Ignition Coils, Spark Plugs & Injectors

Misfires are not automatically an internal engine problem. Coil, spark plug and injector faults can create rough running, poor performance and misleading symptoms. These components should be checked before condemning an engine and again before starting a freshly rebuilt engine.

5. Oil Pump, Pickup & Lubrication System

Any engine that has suffered bearing wear, low oil pressure or oil starvation requires more than new bearings. The oil pump, pickup, oil passages and lubrication system must be inspected so that the original cause is not transferred directly into the rebuilt engine.

Before Ordering: Engine Code First, Measurements Second

Internal engine parts should never be selected from "Polo Vivo 1.4" or "Polo Vivo 1.6" alone. Confirm the engine code and measure the engine before the final rebuild specification is decided.

01. Confirm Engine Code

Identify CLPA, CLPB or CLSA before ordering internal engine parts.

02. Measure Cylinder Bores

Check bore diameter, taper, scoring and out-of-round condition.

03. Measure Crankshaft

Confirm journal condition and the correct bearing size required.

04. Inspect Cylinder Head

Check for cracks, distortion, valve condition and sealing-surface condition.

Your Polo Vivo Engine Is Already Apart. What Else Should You Inspect?

The cheapest component to replace is usually the one you can reach before everything goes back together.

Priority 1: Protect the Rebuilt Engine

Timing Chain Kit
Inspect chain, guides and tensioner before the rebuilt engine goes back into service.
Oil Pump
Particularly important where the original engine suffered bearing or oil-pressure problems.
Oil Filter
Never start a freshly rebuilt engine with the old filter.
Correct Engine Oil
Fresh manufacturer-appropriate oil is essential at first start.

Priority 2: Fix the Cooling System Before It Damages the New Engine

Water Pump
Check for leakage, bearing play and deterioration.
Thermostat
A sticking thermostat can quickly undo an expensive engine rebuild.
Radiator & Hoses
Check for restricted flow, deterioration, swelling, cracking and leaks.
Fresh Coolant
Flush contamination and refill with the correct coolant specification.

Priority 3: The Labour-Saving Parts

Rear Main Seal - INCLUDED
Replace it now while access to the gearbox side of the crankshaft is available.
Clutch Kit - Manual Models
If the gearbox is already removed, inspect the clutch disc, pressure plate and release bearing now.
Engine Mountings
Cracked or collapsed mountings are easier to deal with while the powertrain is being worked on.
Auxiliary Drive Belt
Check belt condition and associated tensioning components before reassembly.

Priority 4: Give the Rebuilt Engine a Clean Start

Service Kit
Fresh filters give the rebuilt engine a clean service baseline.
Spark Plugs
Install correctly specified plugs and inspect ignition coils.
PCV / Breather System
Check ventilation hoses and PCV operation before the rebuilt engine is started.
Fuel Injectors
Poor injector operation can cause rough running and cylinder imbalance.
The OCP rule: if a wear component is difficult or labour-intensive to reach after the engine is assembled, inspect it while the engine is apart. Paying for the same strip-down labour twice makes no financial sense.

Bottom-end knocking Big-end bearings, main bearings, crankshaft journals, oil pressure, oil pump and lubrication system.
Oil-pressure warning Oil level, oil filter, pickup, oil pump, bearing clearances, pressure sender and internal oil passages.

Polo Vivo Engine Rebuild Checklist

Before Assembly
  • Confirm CLPA, CLPB or CLSA engine code.
  • Clean block and oil galleries thoroughly.
  • Measure cylinder bores.
  • Measure crankshaft journals.
  • Check piston-to-bore clearance.
  • Check piston ring end gaps.
  • Check bearing clearances.
  • Inspect cylinder head.
  • Inspect timing-chain components.
During Assembly
  • Follow Volkswagen workshop specifications.
  • Use the correct tightening sequences.
  • Replace single-use fasteners where specified.
  • Use appropriate assembly lubrication.
  • Keep sealing surfaces completely clean.
  • Confirm correct valve timing.
  • Install crankshaft seals using the correct procedure.
  • Check that the lubrication system is correctly assembled.
Before First Start
  • Fill with correct engine oil.
  • Install a new oil filter.
  • Fill and bleed cooling system correctly.
  • Check PCV / crankcase ventilation.
  • Check for fuel, oil and coolant leaks.
  • Verify oil pressure immediately.
  • Monitor coolant temperature carefully.
  • Recheck fluid levels after initial operation.

Standard Size or Oversize? Do Not Guess.

If the crankshaft has been ground or the cylinders have been bored, standard-size pistons, rings or bearings may no longer be correct. Your engine reconditioner should supply the required machining sizes before internal parts are ordered.

And remember: CLPA / CLPB 1.4 and CLSA 1.6 engines are closely related, but their internal specifications are not identical.
