Description

The Oxygen Sensor is also known as an O2 Sensor, Lambda Sensor or Air-Fuel Sensor. Oxygen Sensors form part of the vehicle emission control system and communicate with the vehicle’s ECU reporting the air-fuel mixture in the exhaust system. This helps the ECU optimize the fuel consumption of the vehicle by adjusting the timing and injection system’s flow of fuel to maintain a perfect mixture. Oxygen Sensors also make sure the Catalytic converter is functioning properly. If the sensor after the catalytic converter shows minimal changes from the reading on the upstream oxygen sensor, it is a sign that the catalytic converter is not working properly.

There are oxygen sensors in a different section of an exhaust system. Upstream Oxygen Sensors are closer to the engine system and manifold whilst downstream oxygen sensors are closer to the Catalytic Converter and Muffler. Vehicles fitted with dual exhaust systems will have Oxygen Sensors on both sides of the exhaust system.

Defective Symptoms

There are many different symptoms of a bad oxygen sensor. The best way to determine if your vehicle has a defective oxygen sensor is via a diagnostic machine. Oxygen Sensors can increase fuel consumption significantly if it is going bad. You can also have a lack of power or vehicle stalling. Your engine light usually comes on, but this can mean lots of reasons. Your engine could also run extremely rough even after doing a service. Spark plugs can also fail often during this time. Your car may also emit black smoke.

Beware of contaminated fuel. This has been reported as a major cause of damaging oxygen sensors. If you have an existing oil leak in your engine or your engine is burning oil, this can contaminate your oxygen sensor.

 Food for Thought

It was developed by Robert Bosch GmbH during the late 1960s under the supervision of Dr. Günter Bauman. The original sensing element is made with a thimble-shaped zirconia ceramic coated on both the exhaust and reference sides with a thin layer of platinum and comes in both heated and unheated forms. The planar-style sensor entered the market in 1990 and significantly reduced the mass of the ceramic sensing element, as well as incorporating the heater within the ceramic structure. This resulted in a sensor that started sooner and responded faster.

Oxygen Sensors went into production in 1976. That same year, the Volvo 240/260-series became the first passenger car equipped with the new Bosch sensor. From there, production grew steadily and the Oxygen Sensor became an essential tool for fuel efficiency and the reduction of CO2 emissions.
