Modern vehicles use concentric slave cylinders (CSCs) to control the clutch hydraulically from inside the bellhousing. The CSC acts as both the slave cylinder and the release bearing, which means any leak, seal failure or bearing collapse can quickly lead to a sinking pedal, gear selection problems and sudden clutch failure.

Because the CSC is buried inside the gearbox area, replacing it normally requires full gearbox removal. That is why workshops strongly recommend fitting a new CSC whenever a clutch kit is replaced, doing the full job once is far cheaper and safer than paying for the same labour twice.
