Description

Audi DMF Dual Mass Flywheel

Flywheels — Stable Idle, Smooth Take-Off, Clean Power Transfer

A flywheel acts as the mechanical shock absorber between the engine and gearbox. It stabilises idle, smooths clutch engagement and controls vibration under load. When a flywheel is worn, especially a dual-mass flywheel (DMF), it can cause shudder, rattling, harsh gear changes and can quickly destroy a new clutch kit.

What this flywheel restores

  • Smoother pull-off with reduced clutch shudder
  • Quieter idle with reduced drivetrain rattle
  • Stable engagement in traffic, hills and towing
  • Cleaner gear changes with reduced drivetrain shock

Important fitment considerations

DMF vs SMF — do not guess
  • Most modern vehicles use a Dual-Mass Flywheel (DMF)
  • Some models use a Solid Flywheel (SMF) with a specific clutch type
  • Always confirm by VIN, engine code, gearbox code and OE reference
Starter ring gear & crank sensor alignment
  • Confirm ring gear tooth count and starter engagement
  • Ensure correct trigger wheel pattern for crankshaft sensor
Clutch compatibility
  • Check clutch friction diameter, bolt pattern and pressure plate height
  • Best results when paired with a new clutch kit

When to replace your flywheel

  • Rattling or knocking noises at idle
  • Shudder during pull-off, especially uphill
  • Vibration felt through the pedal or cabin
  • Harsh engagement or chatter
  • Heat spots, cracks, excessive DMF play or worn ring gear teeth

Installation & best practice

  • Replace flywheel and clutch kit together
  • Replace the CSC during gearbox removal
  • Repair rear main seal oil leaks before assembly
  • Use new flywheel bolts and torque correctly
  • Keep friction surfaces completely oil-free
  • Inspect engine and gearbox mountings
  • Replace gearbox oil using correct lubricants

Images are illustrative. Confirm fitment by VIN, engine code, gearbox code and OE part number.

FAQs

Can I fit a new clutch kit onto a worn flywheel?
You can, but it is a risk. A worn flywheel can cause shudder and premature clutch failure.

How do I know if my vehicle uses a DMF or SMF?
Confirm using VIN, OE reference, engine code and gearbox code.

What causes DMF failure in South Africa?
Traffic congestion, hills, towing, overheating and clutch slip.

Which parts should be replaced together?
Flywheel (if worn), clutch kit, CSC and worn mountings.

Data sheet

Description 1
A dual-mass flywheel (DMF or DMFW) is a rotating mechanical device that is used to provide continuous energy (rotational energy) in systems where the energy source is not continuous, the same way as a conventional flywheel acts, but damping
Description 2
any violent variation of torque or revolutions that could cause an unwanted vibration. The vibration reduction is achieved by accumulating stored energy in the two flywheel half masses over a period of time but damped by a series of strong springs, doing
